Gachagua Impeachment! What Comes Next?

As the country sits in anticipation, eyes are set on the impending impeachment proceedings of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The looming question on everyone’s mind is: What happens next? If he is impeached, what are the consequences? Will the Senate unanimously vote to remove him from office? While there are many questions, the answers are still unclear. For now, we can only sit back and watch as the drama unfolds.

But let’s focus on the possibility of Gachagua being impeached. What happens after he’s out of office?

Corruption Allegations

At the heart of this political storm are the corruption charges leveled against Deputy President Gachagua. The allegations paint a picture of wealth accumulation far beyond his official salary. Here are the key corruption accusations related to his rise in wealth:

  1. Amassing Wealth: Gachagua allegedly accumulated wealth worth approximately KSh 5.2 billion since 2022, a figure inconsistent with his official salary.
  2. Use of Proxies: He is accused of using family members and close associates to hide the origins of his wealth, pointing to possible money laundering.
  3. Network of Companies: Gachagua is reportedly linked to 22 companies engaged in various ventures, including real estate, hospitality, and property management.
  4. Redirecting Public Resources: Allegations suggest that he redirected materials intended for public projects to develop private properties, some of which are tied to his family.
  5. Hotel and Real Estate Investments: Gachagua is accused of acquiring luxury hotels and properties through suspicious financial transactions.
  6. Preferential Treatment: He allegedly influenced government contracts in favor of businesses connected to his family, such as Crystal Limited.

If these allegations prove true and Gachagua is impeached, it would set a significant precedent in Kenya’s political landscape—one that would send shockwaves across the entire system. The question remains: Who among the lawmakers is truly without blame?

The Senate Trial and Potential Reactions

Should the National Assembly vote to impeach Gachagua, the case will move to the Senate for trial. A two-thirds majority in the Senate is required to confirm the impeachment. The outcome of the trial will have a lasting impact on Kenya’s political arena.

  1. Senate Trial: This will determine whether Gachagua remains in office. A two-thirds Senate majority vote is required to seal his fate.
  2. Public Reactions: Whether or not Gachagua is impeached, the process will stir strong public reactions. A successful impeachment could lead to increased pressure for accountability from other government officials. On the flip side, a failure to impeach may further erode public trust in Kenya’s leadership.
  3. Impact on the Ruto Administration: If Gachagua is removed from office, President Ruto’s administration will be profoundly affected. The power dynamics within the Cabinet and political alliances could shift, potentially altering the trajectory of his presidency.

Setting a Precedent for Corruption

Gachagua’s potential impeachment could open a door for further investigations into Kenya’s political elite. Some have already begun to speculate whether President William Ruto himself might be next in line, given the corruption allegations that surround him.

Notable Corruption Cases Linked to President Ruto:

  1. Weston Hotel Land Scandal: Ruto is accused of acquiring the land on which Weston Hotel stands illegally. The land was allegedly grabbed from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
  2. Mau Forest Land Grab: Ruto has been implicated in land-grabbing allegations in the Mau Forest region, although no formal charges have been brought.
  3. Arror and Kimwarer Dams Scandal: A total of KSh 21 billion, allocated for the construction of two dams, went missing. Ruto’s involvement, while denied, has raised suspicions.
  4. KPC Land Scandal: During his time as Deputy President, Ruto was linked to irregular land purchases intended for the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).
  5. NYS Scandal: While Ruto himself hasn’t been charged, some of his close associates were implicated in the massive looting of public funds through the National Youth Service.

With these high-profile corruption cases yet unresolved, Gachagua’s impeachment might just set the stage for even bigger names to face similar scrutiny.

As we await the outcome of this impeachment, one thing is clear: Kenyan politics is at a turning point, and the ramifications of this process will be felt for years to come.
