Educating the People: Seats Are Not for Sitting
Today…
We learn.
Because clearly… we have been confusing seats with chairs.
Leaders not seats, it shouldn't be comfort.
Let’s start with the big man.
Governor.
Huyu ndio CEO wa county.
Not brand ambassador.
Not chief guest wa harambees.
CEO.
He runs the county.
Money comes… he decides how it is used.
Projects start… he approves.
Hospitals fail… he answers.
Roads stall… he explains.
Simple.
If things are not working in the county…
huyu ndio mwenye kalamu.
But us?
We vote a Governor because:
“Ni mtu wetu”
“Anajua kuongea”
“Alitupa hope”
“Alikuja na chopper”
Then after a few months…
tunaanza kusema:
“Hakuna dawa hospital…”
“Barabara mbaya…”
“Miradi imekwama…”
And I ask…
ulipigia kura CEO ama MC wa event?
Ohh Yes!!
Now let’s move to the other side.
Senator.
Huyu sio competitor wa Governor.
Huyu ni mkaguzi mkuu wa county huko Nairobi.
The defender.
The watcher.
The one who is supposed to sit in Senate and say:
“Boss… hii pesa imeenda wapi?”
If money disappears…
If projects stall…
If corruption smells…
Senator must speak.
Not whisper.
Speak.
But here is where it becomes comedy.
A Senator serves for 5 years…
another 5 years…
Then comes back and says:
“Nataka kuwa Governor.”
And we clap.
Wee ngoja kidogo…
If your work was oversight…
and things were going wrong…
what exactly were you overseeing?
Traffic?
Let’s be honest.
Some of these seats…Chairs
we have turned them into waiting rooms.
Governor seat — for eating.
Senator seat — for positioning.
Na sisi?
We are the ones opening the door.
Now let’s talk about character.
Because this is where we fail the most.
A Governor we need:
Not a talker.
We need a builder.
Someone who understands numbers — not just crowds.
Someone who can sit with 5 billion and say:
“This will go here… this will fix this… this will change lives.”
Not someone who sees 5 billion and still makes excuses.
We need a Governor who:
- fears misusing public money
- understands planning
- respects systems
- works even when cameras are off
Not someone whose energy comes only when elections are near.
A Senator we need:
Not a friend of the Governor.
Not an enemy of the Governor.
But a problem for bad governance.
Someone who:
- asks uncomfortable questions
- follows the money
- refuses to be silenced
- speaks even when it’s not convenient
Because oversight is not clapping.
Oversight is pressure.
But here is the painful truth.
We don’t like such leaders.
We fear strict Governors.
We call them “watu hawana huruma.”
We avoid tough Senators.
We say “uyu anapenda kelele mingi.”
So what do we do?
We choose comfort.
Then complain about results.
My people…
Leadership is not about who makes you feel good.
It’s about who makes things work.
Because let’s be real…
A good Governor might not attend your funeral.
But your hospital will have medicine.
A good Senator might not give you handouts.
But your money will not disappear.
So choose.
Do you want vibes?
Or do you want results?
As we sit here…
learning…
unlearning…
and slowly waking up…
Jamo is still out there.
Thinking.
Confused.
Being approached.
Being convinced.
And we…
we are still the ones choosing for him.
So this time…
before you clap…
before you shout…
before you say “huyu ndio wetu…”
Ask yourself:
Can this one handle the seat…
or will the seat handle him?
Because these seats…
are not for sitting.
They are for working.
“A seat does not make a leader… but a bad leader can destroy a seat completely.”
Let’s not break the next one again.
As Chávez said, “Once you educate the people, you cannot make them unlearn.”
We have seen the future, and the future is ours.
They think we don’t see. But we are faceless, and yet, we see.
Gods of Taita Taveta, let’s make it in our own image.
